What clinical content taught us about trimming
On medical scripts a line cannot be shortened to fit a timing slot: altered clinical meaning is not an acceptable trade for a tidier mix. We fit takes against the window between one line and the next rather than against each line in isolation, which is why apparent overruns usually are not overruns at all — of 22 lines that looked over budget on that film, only 9 genuinely overran.
A measured finding: TTS engines pad silence
Gemini TTS appends roughly half a second of head and tail silence to every take — 35.4 seconds across 69 takes on that project. A mix that counts padding as speech will compress and trim real dialogue to make room for silence. Stripping head and tail silence before mixing dropped overruns from 18 to 4 and removed the need to speed any audio up. We strip it per-edge rather than globally, because a blanket silence filter also flattens the intentional dramatic pauses the acting direction depends on.
